Split Payments for Hotel Stays
When booking your hotel through Juno, your organization covers accommodations based on their travel policy. If you want more than what’s covered—extra nights, a nicer room, or both—you may have the option to pay the difference yourself through split payments.
How Split Payments Work
Split payments let you customize your hotel stay by paying for the portions that exceed your organization’s policy. Your organization pays what their policy covers, and you pay for any extras.
Two Types of Split Payments
Split payments apply in two situations:
1. Extra Nights (Shoulder Nights)
When you want to stay beyond the covered period—arriving early or staying late—you pay the full nightly rate for the extra nights.
- What you pay: 100% of the extra nights (room rate + taxes/fees)
- What your organization pays: $0 for nights outside the covered period
Example: Your organization covers 3 nights for an event. You want to arrive a day early. You pay for night 1 at the full rate; your organization pays for nights 2–4.
2. Room Upgrade (Out-of-Policy Rate)
When you select a room that exceeds your organization’s maximum rate, you pay the per-night difference between the room rate and the policy limit.
- What you pay: The difference above the policy max (per night)
- What your organization pays: Up to their maximum rate per night
Example: Your organization’s policy allows $150/night. You select a $200/night room. You pay $50/night; your organization pays $150/night.
Combined Example
Both can happen on the same booking:
Scenario: Policy covers 3 nights at $150/night max. You book 4 nights at $200/night.
- Night 1 (extra night): You pay the full $200 (+ taxes)
- Nights 2–4 (covered period): You pay $50/night difference, organization pays $150/night
Your total: $200 + ($50 × 3) = $350 plus applicable taxes and fees.
When Split Payments Apply
Split payments are offered when:
- You select check-in or check-out dates that extend beyond your organization’s covered period (extra nights)
- You select a room that exceeds your organization’s maximum price per night (room upgrade)
- Your organization has enabled split payments in their travel policy
- The hotel booking is in USD (split payments are currently only available for USD bookings)
Not all organizations enable split payments. If split payments aren’t available for your trip, you can request approval from your coordinator to have your organization cover the extra costs.

Your Options: Pay the Difference or Request Approval
When your hotel selection exceeds policy, you’ll see two options:
Option 1: Pay the Difference (Pay Yourself)
Choose this when you’re willing to pay for the extras.
- How it works: Select a payment method and your card is charged immediately when you book
- Approval needed: None—you can book right away
- Best for: When you want to finalize your booking without waiting
Option 2: Request Approval
Choose this when you’d like your organization to cover the full cost.
- How it works: You’ll provide a reason for your request, and your coordinator reviews it
- Approval needed: Yes—your booking waits for coordinator approval
- Best for: When the extra cost is justified by business reasons (flight savings, meeting schedules, etc.)
If you choose to pay the difference, your card will be charged when you complete the booking. Make sure you’re ready to pay before selecting this option.
After Booking
Once you’ve booked with split payment:
- Immediate charge: Your card is charged for your portion plus the processing fee
- Confirmation: You’ll receive a booking confirmation showing both the covered and self-paid portions
- At check-in: The hotel has your full reservation—no additional payment needed for the room
